He engaged in various jobs before pursuing a career as a songwriter and singer. His career took off when he signed with Johny Otis’s label during the early ‘60s, collaborating with renowned artists such as Sam Cooke and Phil Spector. Bono met his future wife, Cher, in the early 1960s, following which the two formed the widely popular “Sonny & Cher” singing duo. Their hit song “I Got You Babe” in 1965 topped the pop charts, escalating their fame. Their success continued with other popular songs like “Baby Don’t Go” and “The Beat Goes On”. The duo also became a renowned nightclub act, blending comedy and singing, leading them to appear in “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour” from 1971 to 1974.
Despite his separation from Cher in 1975 leading to a decline in his music and acting career, Bono transitioned into politics. He became a conservative Republican and successfully ran for mayor of Palm Springs in the late ‘80s.
