Renowned screen veteran Leslie Phillips, famous for his roles in the Carry On franchise and as the voice of the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter, has passed away.

The beloved movie icon breathed his last at the age of 89 on Monday, November 7, following a prolonged illness that marked the end of his remarkable eight-decade career in show business.

According to Phillips’ agent who spoke to the BBC, the esteemed actor passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday night. His wife, Zara Carr, shared with The Sun on Tuesday, November 8, “I’ve lost a wonderful husband, and the public has lost a truly great showman.”

Phillips lent his voice to the Sorting Hat in three Harry Potter movies: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 (2011).

Following his demise, tributes have poured in for the British film icon, who appeared in over 200 films, TV, and radio series throughout his illustrious career.

His wife, Zara, paid a heartfelt tribute to her late husband, saying, “I’ve lost a wonderful husband, and the public has lost a truly great showman. He was simply a national treasure. People adored him. He was mobbed wherever he went.”

Phillips is survived by his third wife, Zara Carr, and four children.
